The line up for the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert series for 2012/13 has been released and it’s a case of the usual suspects and a few new faces. Here’s what we’re looking at this year:

Ticket prices are for 6-21 year olds and adults. BotSoc members are somewhere in between and (K) indicates there’s a Kids Zone at the concert in question.

You’ve gotta get through the international act Daniel Bedingfield who kicks things off (see what I did there?), before the highlights (for me) of Zebra & Giraffe, Arno Carstens and the much underrated Gangs of Ballet in March.

Mango Groove, Goldfish, Freshlyground and (once you’ve remortgaged your house) The Parlotones will obviously be popular, so book early.

Tickets for all concerts are available now from Webtickets.co.za and additional tickets will be available at Kirstenbosch (021 761 2866), from the Tuesday before each concert, when online tickets are sold out.

Hurts Like Heaven

After yesterday’s extraordinary outburst of stories about annoying animals beginning with P and a sleepless night that took me back to the early days of being a dad, I’m in full on zombie mode today and have mainly concerned myself with dozing in the Cat III lab, poking TB with metaphorical sticks.

So, for a bit of energy, some Coldplay with their new video for Hurts Like Heaven:

Which is nice, but will never quite live up to the original “comic” music video of Take On Me.

It was just about a year ago that we popped down to watch Chris et al at Cape Town Stadium. As you may remember, I wasn’t impressed. However, this is pretty decent stuff and right now, anything that keeps me awake is to be welcomed.

Some Few Things

A few things that caught my interest today:

Avon sales are up in South Africa, which is good news for those selling Avon products – and their kids:

“My daughter also took the brochure into school – they both knew that if there were orders then they were sure they were going to have food at the end of the day.”

Volunteer rat trappers required on the Calf of Man. I would do this if I was anywhere near to the Calf of Man. As it is, I will have to continue practising on the moles in my back garden. No bad thing.

I have a bloody earworm from some film my wife watched this weekend. I may need this.

My first homebrew project is underway, with my kit from BeerLab. I’m suddenly concerned over the exact air temperature in my house. Oh, and where I’m going to get 23 litres of beer bottles from in the next week and a half.

The Man United refereeing post which is interesting, but which requires shedloads of extra data before it means very much.

Currently, my favourite song from the new Muse album is Follow Me:

 

…which will definitely be making an appearance on my RunMix02. Big up to Radio One for the amazing light show in the Live Lounge. Yes, I know it’s radio, but really – why bother at all?

The Rand is currently at R8.92/$ and R14.29/£.
I, like the rest of South Africa, am quietly weeping somewhere deep inside.

Kaptein span die seile

Boerestep.
Because we’ve been incredibly naughty and deserve all sorts of punishment, it could just be the next big thing.

You thought it was bad when Kurt Darren threw his now infamous Dans Treffer “Kaptein (span die seile)” at us. And you were right, because it was. If you have somehow managed to avoid this phenomenon thus far, well done, but prepare to join the “what has been heard cannot be unheard” club right here and now with the no expense spent official video:

Now, the musical genius of DJ Naaldekoker (that’s DJ Dragonfly to us rooineks), has taken arguably Kurt’s most irritating famous work and set it to a dubstep beat, thus creating the genre which will be henceforth known as Boerestep.

If this catches on – and with the current success of anything and everything dubstep, together with the continued, bewildering popularity of Afrikaans pop, I have absolutely no doubt that it might – we could be on the verge of the biggest thing to hit South African music since Craig Hinds et al released Indigo Girl, which was, quite literally, a Watershed moment.

Please forward any further examples of Boerestep to us here at 6000 miles… and we will keep the population abreast and forewarned of the advancing menace of the genre.
Prizes may be given for the best (worst) examples.

Tessellate – Alt-J

Incoming from Cambridge band Alt-J who apparently played at the Tramlines Festival in Sheffield this year.
I’m not sure how long this has been doing the rounds overseas, but it’s a relative newcomer to SA and I’m really enjoying it. That probably has more to do with the heavy piano chord introduction and the messy percussion throughout than the fact that the lead singer looks a bit like Howard Moon from The Mighty Boosh.

Probably.

The official video is here, but it doesn’t do much for me.

Apparently:

The painting on which the video is based “The School of Athens” shows the brightest and best of their day, the people lauded as great, who commanded the most respect in society. The contrast is to show what has become most respected in out society – money, women, empty fame and bravado, these are the things argued over and lauded now. The LA Gangster schtick works well as visual shorthand for this.

Since I agree with the sentiment, maybe I just don’t like looking at chavs.
