Day 583 – The day of rest

13 delicious hours of sleep and I’m still craving bedtime this evening. My recovery skills are not what they used to be. I’m spending the day sitting inside in front of the football.

Tomorrow looks like a proper summer’s day, which probably means I’ll be spending the day sitting outside in front of the football.

Hopefully, it’ll be a better watch than today.

Day 570 – Weekend

After my being broken yesterday morning, we had an enjoyable afternoon out at a friend’s place with sparkling conversation, delicious not-homemade pizza and lots and lots of sitting down. It’s hard to say which was the best bit, but the sitting down was very nice.

Then home just in time to see United bounce two goals in in the last ten minutes to beat the mighty Stoke City:

…and then early to bed.

It’s been a bit of a lazy Sunday. We’re looking forward to the return of our prodigal son, who has had the worst weather for his Scouts survival weekend. Cold (9C), Wet (26mm) and Miserable (3 sad faces*). In the meantime, I’ve lit the fire (the SA equivalent of having to switch your central heating on again) and played some lackadaisical pool.

I’m about to go and sit in front of Everton v West Ham, and even if it’s really exciting, I absolutely reserve the right to fall asleep on the couch like an old man. If the caps fits…

* I don’t know what the SI unit is for Misery

Day 545 – Jobs

Yesterday was a great family day. Kids off school, wife off work, we got some errands run and we had some fun.
We put up a dartboard and threw things (mainly darts, to be honest) at it.
We even cooked a Japanese Katsu Curry together.

The only fly in the so-called ointment was my decision to try and enjoy a beer for the first time in months – just to celebrate the possible early signs of returning taste and smell.

I woke up with severe hangover symptoms at 2am. Would not recommend.
Drugs for the pain, though? 10/10 would recommend.

I’ll leave it a while before trying again.

Today is supposed to be a day of rest (doctor, wife), but there are a few quick jobs I can surely get done. New lighting in the bar, door handles here and there, some hooks in the wardrobe, some plant stuff in the garden.

Also, some darts to be flung. And no beers.

Day 535 – Surprising screenshots

Yesterday turned out to be a pretty good day. I pushed myself (on doctor’s orders) to see what I could get done, and I got quite a lot done. Yes, I am suffering a little bit today, but nowhere near as much as I would have expected.

I’m almost – almost – daring to hope that I’ve turned a corner.

I put my watch on for the first time in weeks, mainly just to keep an eye on my heart rate (doctor’s orders again), and well, wow, look at this:

A whole dog walk round the block, sure, but the steps! The steps!
That’s the first time I’ve even come close to that figure since I got this damn thing. I really wasn’t aiming for anything, so it was a huge surprise when I spotted it.

Other points: 72 resting HR is still too high, but that’s why I had the watch on. 150bpm is also still too high, considering I didn’t actually do anything strenuous (yes, you guessed it, doctor’s orders). And the stress level, well that’s always a bit of an outlier on the days that I watch United play.

Although…

Wow. Amazing.

We’ve been waiting to spank someone for about 18 months now, so this was long overdue. And yes, it was “only” Peterborough, but we’ve been drawing to “only” Luton and losing to “only Huddersfield” recently, so this was really great to watch (if a little stressful for at least the first 51 minutes) (see above).

But aside from the result – even better than the result perhaps – this was a cohesive, skillful, positive, enthusiastic, even occasionally awe-inspiring Blades’ performance. Just look at the quality of those goals. JUST LOOK AT THEM!

I’m almost – almost – daring to hope that we’ve turned a corner.
