OMG! A brand finally recognises that Dads exist!

Finally, after all the times that I’ve moaned about the lack of recognition that Dads get in the whole parenting process, including this infamous piece, it seems like Dove for Men have understood that there’s more than one person doing the parenting in many families.
Or maybe they just wanted to appeal to their target market, he thought, cynically.

Either way…

Recognising the Mums, there’s society, helpfully and regularly propped up by stuff like the 2012 P&G ad, (they did one for the Sochi games too) and belittling the Dads, there are things like this baby outfit:

How utterly condescending.

It’s not, as I have pointed out before, that I am suggesting that Mums aren’t valuable, hardworking, wonderful people when it comes to being a parent.
And I’m not even claiming that Dads should expect to be celebrated for their role in bringing up kids. All I’m saying is that fairly regularly, there are two doing the parental tango. And it seems awfully unjust that one of them is routinely overlooked.

Anyway, here’s that heart-warming, worm-has-turned, just-in-time-for-Father’s-Day Dove for Men ad:

Lovely. The monkey bars and bottom wiping scenes seem particularly familiar.

As the ad people say:

Three quarters of dads say they are responsible for their child’s emotional well-being, while only 20% of dads see this role reflected in media. It’s time to acknowledge the caring moments of fatherhood that often go overlooked.

Christ alone knows where those 20% have been looking.
Look, I think that it’s going to take more than 61 seconds of Youtube video to even things up, but I’m glad that someone has at least made a start.

An important lesson in parenting

I saw this yesterday and it’s actually rather thought-provoking:

Sometimes we need to remember that while we want our kids to grow up “in our image”, they need to maintain their individuality as well. I was desperate for Alex to become a world-famous footballer – after all, that was my dream as a kid, wasn’t it every young boy’s? – but he’s simply not interested. He has other things he wants to do.
I tried for a while before I finally realised that he’s not me, he’s him. And that’s just great.

Fortunately, we never got as far as him having to write it down on a football and kick it to me.

Bargaining ratios

Haha. I wonder how many parents recognise this scenario, nicely illustrated by Dave Engledow:

Says Dave:

As Alice Bee learns to hone her bargaining skills, the ratio of nutrition to bribes has gotten completely out of balance.

Regular readers may recognise Dave and Alice Bee from the excellent World’s Best Father calendar post. Amazingly, it appears that she is still alive, despite her Dad’s best efforts. 🙂

P.S. Somewhat amazingly, my kids actually LIKE broccoli… Who knew that sort of thing happened?

And today I’m recommending the Two Oceans Aquarium at the Waterfront. We were down there yesterday, and no, despite the rain, it really wasn’t as busy as you think it was. It’s not like it was our first time, we’re members and we go down there maybe every other month. But it’s great value and the kids love it. Every single time.

It helps that we spend as much time as we can exploring the rock pools around Agulhas and it’s a real bonus to be able to tie the two in together.

Bonus for me this time around (aside from the smiles on the faces of my loved ones, obviously) was this Rockhopper penguin, which had set up his… her… its nest right next to the fence in the penguin enclosure.

Not wanting to intrude, I carefully slipped the very end of my phone (just the tip) against the bamboo fencing poles and took this from all of 20cm away.

If anyone knows how to remove beak marks from a Sony Xperia T, I’d be obliged if you could get in touch.

Anyway, I suspect that I’m teaching Cape Town parents to suck eggs when it comes to suggesting the Aquarium as a good spot to take your kids. But just in case you were hesitating, go and do it.
