Saturday morning views

We were out early for Alex’s karate kumite in Camps Bay this morning. He punched and kicked his way to a gold medal, including a stunning victory over a visiting Afrikaans blue belt from the Boland. It wasn’t xenophobic though. Technically, he was allowed to attack him, that’s what they were there for.

On the way back, we detoured up Signal Hill and took pictures of mountains, sculptures and shipping. The Queen Mary 2 is in Cape Town until this evening, and she’s always worth a look see. The conditions were near perfect – ok, if anything, a little too bright – and we shot lots on our various devices: some of the results of which can be seen in this flickr album.

Go big and black here

Now, having filled the intervening period with painting the braai and mending the lawn (riveting stuff, I know), I’m off for a quick Everton v Burnley.

There may also be cold beer involved. And who could blame me?

Outrageous penalty

Ben O’Connor netted the 3rd period penalty winner for Team GB against the mighty (seriously, they were group favourites) South Koreans to seal an outstanding comeback 3-2 in Eindhoven.

But it’s less what he did, more how he did it. Filthy skillz!

It took me until the second replay to work out what he did here. No wonder the keeper didn’t get near it.

Great Britain had already beaten Croatia and Estonia in the tournament. Two more wins in their remaining games (against the Netherlands and Lithuania) will guarantee their promotion into the second-tier Division 1A, leaving them tantalisingly close to playing with the Big 16 teams in the Championship section of international ice hockey.

Irish jockey

A week too late for the Grand National, here’s the wonderful Irish Jockey sketch from ITV’s The Sketch Show:

I must say that I’d forgotten all about The Sketch Show – I never really even gave it much attention when I was in the UK. But looking back now – what a line-up:

The original cast was Lee Mack, Jim Tavare, Tim Vine, Karen Taylor and Ronni Ancona.

And writers included Ricky Gervais and Aussie Matthew Hardy. It’s impressive stuff, and this skit with Lee Mack just shows why he’s still so popular on shows like Would I Lie To You.

And if you’re mood for more laughs, can I please remind you of this guy?

Tablecloth

We live in a beautiful world. Yes we do. Yes we do.
And I happen to live in one of the more beautiful bits.

Here’s Table Mountain showing off in NatGeo’s pic of the day.

That’s Table Mountain in front of you in Brendon Wainwright’s shot. Camps Bay is to the right, the City Bowl to the left and, over the shoulder of Devils Peak, the Southern Suburbs.

It’s nice, isn’t it?
