1989 cool

Susanna Hoffs’ Throwback Thursday picture on… er… Thursday was kinda cool – in a 1989 kinda cool way:

Do you see what she did there? I see what she did there.

There’s something a bit odd about seeing icons of a bygone age together, in that bygone age. Yes, we see them together now, and that’s great, but it’s wholly manufactured. This was a moment when a whole band met another whole band and they had their photos taken together. I’m guessing Music Awards after-party, but if so, everyone is being remarkably well-behaved. Also, the boy-band/girl-band thing adds weight to the weirdness. That, and the fact that they managed to get all seven of them in and virtually nothing or no-one else.

Note also that the Bangles’ photographers’ obligation to get at least some of their legs into shot has come at the expense of Pål’s hair.

Which is not bad thing, based on my memory of Pål’s hair in the late 1980s.

World Cup goal quota photo

With England already out, you might think that there’s no reason for me to continue to show interest in the World Cup. But I wasn’t really expecting much of England and I’m actually not a huge fan of the national football team. In fact, I was more bothered about losing SuperBru points in the Uruguay game (I had 1-1) than the fact that Rooney et al. were heading home.

Treachery!

Anyway, you’d be wrong about the lack of interest thing, because it’s football; it’s the beautiful game and I will watch every minute that I can simply because of that.

And proving that you can do beautiful photography of the beautiful game, here’s a fantastic photo by Siphiwe Sibeko of Clint Dempsey scoring for the USA against Portugal. It’s one of the many on the ever-growing Telegraph World Cup Photo Album.

Not the first time we’ve connected the name “Siphiwe” with a bulging World Cup net either, is it?

Belated Flickr Update

We found ourselves in the midst of some ridiculously mild weather for the midwinter’s weekend, and thus we headed up to Rhodes Memorial to sample some views and some nature.
Yes, I took a few photos, the kids spotted a quagga or three and there may have been the bonus of tea and cake at the little restaurant up there.

It was only when I did a quick upload this evening that I realised that there were some photos from last month (OMG, no?!?) (But actually OMG, yes!) that had yet to be uploaded to Flickr as well.

This I have now done. And suddenly, I have a whole new raft of potential quota photos!

I promise to use them sparingly and only when necessary.

I tacked the old photos from last month onto this album, and I put today’s stuff here. Go see!

Soup

A day featuring soup, breadmaking, biltong and droewors hanging, running (for the first time in seven weeks), more soup, some tennis, beer, red wine, some changing of a tyre on Ou Kaapse Weg and downloading some One Direction music (don’t ask) has left me exhausted. It may just have been the running bit that had most of the effect, but suffice to say, I’m in no fit state to do anything but finish off my One Direction download and go to bed.
Quota photo time then, and this from an equally squally Sunday (I think) last June:

Talking of photos, I’ve actually chosen not to renew my Flickr Pro account this year on several grounds: firstly, the $25 fee and our current exchange rate; secondly, the raft of features available to none Pro users (I’ll miss Stats, but that’s about it); Thirdly, the fact that I am not a Pro; and fourthly, that even a year on from this, it’s still not actually very good.

In happier news, my 1D download is now complete (despite the anti-virus program’s continued indignant warnings) and I’m off in the one direction of the warmth of my bed and France v Jamaica on the tele.
