Prinia

Better day today, but that has meant a lot of catching up with stuff that didn’t get done yesterday: shopping, cleaning, exercise etc etc. So I still don’t have a lot of time before the football.

Step forward then, a quota of a Karoo Prinia from Kirstenbosch last year:

Some might say that the Pelargonium spp. leaves on the right are a bit much, but I quite like the balance they give the bird and the dry, brown sticks on the left.

More? Tomorrow.

No time today

Fun, but busy day. SUPing (not me – I ‘togged), Wine farm (wind-related carnage), Airport trip (before loadshedding).

More on everything another time, but not right now.

Here’s an African Dusky Flycatcher to keep you entertained.

Thanks for your understanding.

More Cape Town “tourism”

The quotation marks are because Kirstenbosch is somewhere we go fairly often anyway. Not like yesterday’s trip out.

Anyway, I was there this morning with my dad and my camera, and I managed to get a couple of images despite a somewhat quiet morning on the wildlife front.

I don’t profess to be an expert in these sort of things, but I’m fairly confident in saying that what we have here is a bird, and a frog.

I’m aware that it’s possible to be far more specific with classifying birds and frogs, but basically, as I understand it, the further you go down that road, the more likely you are to be incorrect. And so I’m sticking with my original identifications, and leaving things at a much more general – but also accurate – level.

A bird and a frog, then. In that order.

Amietia fuscigula & Cinnyris chalybeus for the curious and the taxonomists out there.

Mountain Photo of the Year

Yep: does exactly what it says in the title.

Here are the finalists, and here is the winner:

This is going to sound a bit moany, but while there are some pretty good photos in there, there’s nothing that jumps out at me as being particularly special. And I just think that if you are going to have a competition like this, with such a grand title and such a huge range (no pun intended) of potentially incredible subjects, then the ones that get through to the final stage should be amazing.

Bit disappointed with these. I’ll be looking to up the standard next year (T&Cs apply).

Crossing

A quick post during a very busy day, which still has at least 9 hours to run.

Feeling a little overwhelmed by all that needs to be done, and taking some comfort from this little guy we spotted on (and safely removed from) the Brandfontein road last week.

If he can do it (with a bit of help), then surely I can, too.

One big positive is a big negative on a follow up test for the Boy Wonder. Still another 2 minutes to run on the LFT next to me as I type, but it’s not going to chuck up another line in the next 120 seconds, and that’s very good news.

Aside from his viral load, he continues to improve healthwise as well, although he has now developed a very viralesque rash on his face and chest, which is – as ever with Covid – equal parts weird and interesting.
