Áine

Apart from the news of some vote thing or other, some (or more) of my UK Facebook friends have been raving over the performance of one Áine Cahill from Glastonbury on BBC TV last night.

I did a bit of research (I googled) and found this rather nice tune from the Irish songstress.

Yes, it’s a bit schoolgirl GCSE composition, but there’s power and promise in that voice. I’m getting hints of Florence Welch, and it’s only 10am. Because I’m outside the EU, I haven’t heard yesterday’s BBC stuff yet, but I’ll be making sure to follow it up.

And no. I have no idea how to pronounce her name. Knowing Gaelic language rules, I’m going for “Colin” or something.

Objects In The Mirror

Here’s a new video from a-ha for Objects In The Mirror, it’s “the video is meant to be a gift to the fans… a condensed version of the visuals from the tour”. And yes, I recognise some or perhaps even more of these from Bergen. I may never be able to forget the mannequin violinists (some homage to The Sun Always Shines On TV there).

It’s directed by Jonas Bjerre, lead singer of Danish band Mew and partner in crime of a-ha’s Magne in their side project, Apparatjik (with Coldplay’s Guy Berryman and Swedish producer Martin Terefe). You may remember them from such posts as Snow Crystals and the catchily-titled New Apparatjik album in February.

And I’m not sure there could be a more fitting song to sign off the tour with:

Looking back is bittersweet
Love, the world was at your feet
Lift your eyes above the street
This is where you once belonged

as the three cute wolf cubs start to dance in unison.

Iron Maidgone

They came, they saw, they went all around Table Bay and Robben Island.

And then they left, on flight 666 once again.

Observant people will have noted that it was basically 54 minutes before they actually went anywhere. The cost of flying a Boeing 747-400 for that long? Somewhere around $25,000, or just under R400,000.
Just to play in the sky over Table Bay.

But then, if you had that money, a 747 and a day like today – why on earth wouldn’t you?

Thinking About You

Well done to Goodluck for this wonderful cover of London Beat’s 1990 hit Thinking About You, and well done again for breaking the mould on the amazing video to go with it.

It’s all wholly implausible, of course. No one leaving Sea Point and heading out into the Cape wilderness to relive memories of a lost love would travel westbound along Rhodes Drive, would they?
And no-one jumping into a Cape farm dam under those sort of grey skies is going to be smiling. We’ve all tried that (albeit not necessarily with a couple of guys who look like they were probably once half of ABBA) and it’s simply TOO DAMN (no pun intended) COLD.
Perhaps a grimace, but certainly not the apparent joyful countenances that we see here.

No. It’s all just acting.
And I’m pretty sure survival blankets were involved at some point soon after the take.

More seriously though, congratulations to  all involved. It feels terrible to have to say this, but thank you for not going down the tried, tested and (sadly) commercially comfortable route of the “traditional” relationship music video.

Iron Maiden (& plane) in Cape Town

And while we’re on about Cape Town flights, flight 666 landed here last night.
666. And people complained about Lady Gaga bringing Satanism to SA.

That was the flight number for Iron Maiden’s tour 747-428, flown in from Perth by their lead singer, Bruce Dickinson. I bet that the Tall Accountant can hardly contain himself.

The plane, an ex-Air France unit named ‘Ed Force One’ and commissioned from Air Atlanta Icelandic, is an upgrade from the 757 that the band used on their previous tour.

TF being the registration demonym for Iceland in the same way that ZS is for South Africa.
I’ve no idea. I don’t make the rules.

The plane adds an extra dimension to the fans’ experience and is a draw in its own right, both at the airports on the tour and on the merchandise site.
