I’m not saying that my car was in a bit of a state when we returned from the dirt roads of the Southern Tip, but I after washed it yesterday, I received an email from the mayor of Cape Agulhas asking for his municipality back.
Sadly, most of it is blocking the drains down the road already.
I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas, but for those who do, it can be a big thing. And since eating is one of the main pastimes of the day, and loadshedding will almost certainly the unwelcome guest at your party, I thought that it might be useful to look at when you can expect to not have electricity to cook, light or do anything else with.
Of course, we don’t know how bad the blackouts will be on Christmas Day: demand should be fairly low in the greater scheme of things, so hopefully, there won’t be too much of an issue, but here is what you will be looking at in Cape Town for Stages 2, 4 and 6 on Christmas Day:
CHRISTMAS DAY 2022: 6000.co.za
Those numbers represent the different loadshedding zones in the city, because this is taken from the City of Cape Town schedules, and they’ve been glued together using t e c h n o l o g y so that you can see what to expect and when to expect it.
As an example, if you’re in Zone 5 [waves] then you can expect to be cut at 0400 and 2000 in Stage 2, 0400, 1200 & 2000 in Stage 4, and 0200, 0400, 1200 & 2000 in Stage 6.
And, because it’s another big day in the calendar, here’s the same table for New Year’s Eve, 31st December:
NEW YEAR’S EVE 2022: 6000.co.za
Looks like at least Obs and Camps Bay are going to be bringing in the New Year in darkness. Sorry for you guys. At least you can party through the night once the lights come back on.
Assuming they come back on.

Bit knackered after last night’s fun and games. So I’ve been moping around the house, avoiding the rain outside. Unusually for me, I watched a bit of cricket. And I would have watched more, but…
Yeah, that’s full time (or whatever they call it in cricket). I caught (no pun intended) the end of the Strikers’ innings, and then watched – along with everyone else – in disbelief, as the Thunder batting lineup comprehensively failed:
With the Australian way of writing the wickets before the runs, it was sometimes actually difficult to work out which was which throughout the 5.5 overs. The Thunder lost wickets for 2, 5, 5, 7, 9, 9, 10 and 10 before rallying with a decent fightback to get to… er…14. And then (briefly) 15. Incredible. Big shout out (no pun intended) to Doggett, Rossouw and Extras for their top scoring exploits.
Sydney Thunder were dismissed for 15 – the lowest score in men’s Twenty20 history – as they were thrashed by Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League on Friday.
The previous lowest score was Turkey’s 21 against the Czech Republic in 2019.
Ha! Yes! I think we all remember where we were for that one.
Thoughts and prayers to the TV schedulers who suddenly had to fill an extra hour with stuff after being sold way short.
Back home and fighting against borrowed time ahead of a Big Night Out™ this evening.
So here’s a quote photo of last night’s rubbish sunset. Blue hour came early…
The previous evening, we’d got glorious peach and orange and then a visit from an otter (not a euphemism). Last night had its own charm, but no colour and no wildlife.
Sketchy internet, and I have dodgeball to watch, so let’s get this done quickly.
Nice day today, headed out to the Black Oystercatcher with Little Miss 6000 for one of their outstanding platter lunches, but did that whole game drive meander on the way through the Agulhas National Park:
…and ended up on beautiful Brandfontein beach en route as well:
Aside from the lunch and the company, the highlight was probably a family of ostriches – at least 8 juniors and their loving parents. Here’s dad and a couple of the little ‘uns.
Plenty more photos to sort out – maybe (probably?) even a re-edit of these ones – but I need to go and enjoy the sunshine right now. (And charge my devices before loadshedding.)
