Those photos are finally up. Here’s the link to flickr. Taken with the new camera (a Sony DSC-HX300 in case you’re interested) and featuring mainly images of my fantastic flight on Sunday afternoon, but with some others interspersed in there as well.
Here, for example, is a crab. And that was basically taken at sea level.

The camera is great, but I have to get to know it and find my way around. In the meantime, I’m just enjoying its extra power and extra pixels.

Time continues to be an issue, but I shall almost certainly have some more blog postage tomorrow.

Til then…

Nice pics

Via TheAtlantic, some incredible photos from the 3rd edition of the Red Bull Illume Image Quest photo competition.

My favourite is Benjamin Ginsberg’s shot of Bobby Okvist high above the Wedge, in Newport Beach, California

The photographer describes it thus:

First wave out, Bobby was in position for the largest peak of the day. The wave was breaking so far out that when the refracted energy peaked, it crumbled. The wave chased Bobby towards shore, only to heave over and start barreling in the shallow water where a wave usually first breaks. Without enough speed to make it back to shore, and the wave violently closing in behind him, Bobby carved up the face and aired off the back, shocking even himself at the height he flew.

Yes. If you look carefully, you can see the look of surprise on his face.

Aside from being described as shocked, Bobby Okvist is also described as a surfer. Am I alone in noting that one vital piece of equipment seems to be missing?

Look Both Ways

With the sudden end to the appalling weather, we took the opportunity to get down to Tokai Forest and work off some cabin fever.
Beneath the pine trees the ground was fairly dry and firm, but further down there was still pretty of evidence of flooding on the lower lying ground.

Wet and muddy, we found ourselves the end of the unfinished, unused Lismore Avenue road bridge over the M3 and I couldn’t resist clambering up and having a quick look up top.

Looking North (above) and South (below)

It wasn’t particularly pleasant up there – lots of broken glass and drug paraphernalia lying around, low walls and plenty of exposed metalwork to trip over.
That said, I will head back up there with a proper camera and get some better shots sometime. And I will find out why there’s an unfinished, unused bridge going over the M3 near Tokai. (Although, Cape Town is known for its unfinished bridges, of course.)

High on the happy side

A quick quota photo (including an important number) from a boozy afternoon at High Constantia winery yesterday with some great company and some wonderfully friendly and accommodating staff.

An interesting selection of wines, including a fantastic MCC, a dodgy Shiraz and the ‘Sebastiaan’ – a really, really superb Bordeaux Blend.

Also worth a look, their Terra Madre limited edition, bottle fermented, fizzy cider (as pictured above), full of apples, alcohol and vitamin C.
