From on high

Here’s a HUGE satellite image of southern Africa, taken by NASA last week as the cold front swept over us:

It looks ok at this sort of size, but you’d be foolish not to go and have a play on the original version here – merely to see if you can spot your place of residence.

If it’s in Cape Town, though, that seems unlikely. Because cloud.

Quota crystal ball photo

Having given the crystal ball an outing in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire last month, it seemed only natural to give it a go in Newlands Forest this morning.
No, I’m not quite sure on my thinking there either.

Anyway, here you go:

It was a wonderfully clear day, and – perhaps predictably for a forest – our view was only obscured by trees. Occasionally, we escaped these arboreal obstructions and this was taken at one of those times. Readers willing to go the extra mile will be able to zoom in and see Cape Hangklip in the magical glassy globe, and that’s some 60kms south east of where we were.

More photos of the day can be seen on Flickr.

Bergen rooftops

I’m missing Bergen.
Weird? Mmm.
Somewhat inexplicable? Possibly.
A bit disconcerting? Certainly.

Time to revisit it in the form of photography, then.

And while Norway has an amazing amount of outstanding natural beauty, a lot of which I photographed to death, this distinctly urban scene, ‘togged from the top of Mount Fløyen is one of my favourites from our visit.

OK, so it may not look like much here, but you should see it full screen on black.

You really should.

(i.e. please do)

Damn

Dam level figures released today for Cape Town’s ‘Big 6’ indicate that we’re 0.4% worse off than we were this time last week, teetering once again just above the magical 30% ‘CRITICAL‘ level, below which nothing actually changes.

Oh then, to be in Sheffield (as I was a couple of weeks ago) where the dams are just about as full as they can be:

That total of 10,410,000,000 gallons is equal to 47,324,796,900 litres, in case you were wondering.

And what does a dam that’s 98% full look like? Like this.
And what does the other side of the wall look like when the dam is 100.1% full? Like this.

Are we there yet?

You know, I rather fancy that we are.

It’s taken a while, but it does seem that the photos from my Bergen/Sheffield trip are up on Flickr. There are a few from the actual concert (mainly taken by Mrs 6000’s S6 because I was was otherwise engrossed), a few more from the trip along the fjords, and one or two additional images of beautiful Bergen.

And then a few of Sheffield as well, perhaps without the drama of Norway, but where spring was springing and there were still decent shots to be had.

This one is one of those best viewed bigger and on black.

There are individual sets for each bit of the trip, but you can have a general look see on the May 2016 trip collection page on Flickr and go from there.
