Egg-chasery festival set to begin

There’s a big egg-chasing tournament about to start in Japan this week, and what egg-chasing tournament worth its salt doesn’t have a egg-chasing themed crossword on an obscure blog 14,729km away to celebrate its opening?

Not this one.

Have fun on the puzzle, enjoy the rugby, and may the best team win – and if not them, then England or South Africa.

Grr

I am irritated.

I’ve pulled something (got old) at football on Tuesday evening. I think it’s my Extensor Digitorum Longus.

Third down on the left for those not fond of Latin and/or anatomy and/or searching muscle labels.

I’ve googled my symptoms and I’m going to die.

Spoiler: We all are, eventually.

More seriously, I could only manage a gentle 3km wander with the beagle this morning, so I’m looking for answers:

Treatment may consist of physical therapy, muscle relaxers, pain medications, anti-inflammatories, castle milk stout, heat, ice or orthopedic devices.

I may have added slightly to that quote. And I may have to go and get some of that physical therapy tomorrow. I’ll make a start on some of the other stuff this evening.

Even more annoying is the fact that Yoshimi (the new car) looks set to be ready to pick up tomorrow, we have a hectically busy weekend coming up, and driving seems to be the thing that hurts the most.

I am irritated.

This season

Sheffield United kick off their season this afternoon with an away day at Bournemouth. I’m looking forward to it with a certain amount of trepidation, but as a lifelong fan, it is just brilliant to see them back up in the Premier League.

You don’t have to be a rocket surgeon to work out that this is going to be a tough season for the Blades. The jump from Championship to Premier League is huge, and while the rewards of being up there are also impressive, there’s no way that  we can compete financially from day one. Our basic aim should be survival, and for that reason, I’m more than ready to accept 17th place or higher if I get offered it anytime soon.

Sadly, I’m pretty sure that’s not how things work.

I’ve made many predictions about football over the years, and been vaguely accurate in at least some of them, so ahead of our big day today, I thought I’d make a couple more.

This season my predictions for United are as follows:

I think that we are capable of giving anyone a difficult time at Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane. Sure, I don’t expect us to win all our home games, but I think we will surprise some clubs when they come to S2.

Of course, I recognise that we are going to lose a lot more games than we’ve been used to of late. And we might ship some serious numbers on occasion too. But we’re playing the likes of the  Champions of Europe this season, not the Champions of the Third Division, and so some reality is to be expected in the dreamland that we find ourselves.

As I’ve said above, I’ll more than happily settle for staying up this season. Given where we’ve come from and who we’re up against, just doing that will be another massive achievement. And anything better will be a huge bonus.

I want us to play every game with the spirit that we throw into every FA Cup tie against the big boys, because every game will be that important and will be that intense. I know that the true fans will happily accept any scoreline if the team have played their hearts out: we do understand what we’re up against here.

I’m just so happy to see us back up in the Premier League and I’m hoping against hope that this is the start of a positive new chapter for the mighty Red And White Wizzzzzards!

Technology is great…

…when it works.

Draft night was good fun last night, but mere minutes before its conclusion, the technology decided to “roll back” the draft “up to and including round 1, pick 1”.

161 players were lost. Yes, including Mo Salah.

Fortunately, some much-appreciated manual labour by El Presidente means that we now find those 161 players reallocated to their respective fantasy teams and we go again this evening to fill the remaining 31 positions. Three of those picks are mine, and I have two surefire winners in mind. I’ll probably mess up the other one, as usual.

In tenuously related news, I paid for my pizza and beer last night with six R20 notes. That’s because technology is great when it works.
I drew R600 from the ATM on Monday, and every last Rand came out in R20 notes. We have R50s, R100s and even R200s, and you can work out many, many permutations making up 600 bucks… but oh no, I had to get thirty brown ones. Why would any machine think that was a good idea? Now my wallet is so full, it hurts when I sit on it, but I’m still not ever so rich.

Technology is great. When it works.
