Overhead

Away to Robben Island today, so here’s a QP of an SAAF Oryx helicopter that flew rather low over our roof the other evening.

Yeah, I know you were probably expecting rotor blades and wheels and camouflage (the staple ingredients of any helicopter), but it was dark out and this rather abstract image is what came of an 8 second shot (with a camera) at the roaring beast above us.

On the way to footy

Indeed, and slightly early, due to a drop off along the way, and a weird lack of inbound traffic. So I pulled over here, and took a (phone) photo:

Beautiful.

There can’t be too many football pitches with this just across the road.

Still, there’s something to be said for an Arnold Laver timber yard right next door to the main car park, too.

And so we’re back…

… from Outer Space Mossel Bay.

Well, the Mossel Bay area. We didn’t actually stay in Mossel Bay at all.

And what a great week it was. If there was any criticism I could make, it was that I would have liked a bit of extra time in each of the places we stayed. Three very different locations, but each with their own charm and unique offerings.

And then, to finish off an already memorable week, a quick trip back into town to have a go on the world’s longest over sea zipline (their words, not mine). 1.1km. Quite the ride.

Can you see me? The little parachute was a necessity for continuing life and mobility, given the strong tailwind.

Inevitably, there will be more photos (it seems that over 2,500 were taken over the seven days we were away), but equally inevitably, there are a number of jobs I need to catch up with, Lightroom is “being difficult” and I surely can’t actually be expected to sort all of those images on a single day, anyway.

Right?

Right.

So: more soon.

Lioness

An amazing game drive this morning at Botlierskop. Well worth the pre-6am wake up.
We saw so much [cheetah kitten!], but getting close – really close – to this lioness was a personal highlight.

Literally so close that I couldn’t even get her whole head in frame from the far side of the truck. My daughter was within a metre of those teeth.

An incredible morning. (And yes, I still have a daughter.)

Bird Fight II – The Big Boys

I recently shared a photo that my son had taken of a dispute on our cottage bird table. But here’s another image of some birds fighting. Bigger birds.

This one was taken (as you can likely see) by Carin Malan, and is posted here with her permission (thanks, Carin). The “little” bird on the left is a Tawny Eagle (wingspan 1-7 – 2.0m!), and a proper big boy, a White-Backed Vulture (2.1-2.3m) is on the right.

What an amazing action shot. The explosive dust really adds to it.

We don’t get either of these birds down in the Western Cape, which is just as well: the bird table would never cope.
