Day 728 – Sunbird on an Erica

Wondering about that post above? You might want to look here.

Right, back to business. Sunbird on an Erica:

I know, I know, it’s serious.

Many early mornings at the moment seem to be being spent in Kirstenbosch Gardens, which is no bad thing at all. Always good to drag the last moments of summer out as long as possible, and our membership there means that we can sneak in long before the hoi polloi get their grubby feet all over the paths and lawns.

It’s also a lot quieter, meaning that the birds are less skittish and more willing to hang around the heathers and fynbos exhibits. As you can see above.

Day 726 – Camps Bay

You’d never go there as a Capetonian, because it’s tourist deluxe, but we had a nice wander along the beach – which wasn’t too busy – and a lovely lunch there today. Because we too were tourists for a little while.

We’re approaching the end of a Covid-disrupted holiday season, so it wasn’t packed, but there were still a healthy number of foreign accents and languages around, enjoying the sunshine and the weak Rand.

We were too early for most of the Cape Town rich and famous post-“work” party set, although there was a noticeably loud table full of surfwear-clad 20-somethings laughing and slapping each other’s egos, every sentence beginning with “100s!” and ending in “bru” or “am I raart?”.

The beach was hot, the water was (as is traditional) very cold and once we avoided the sunglasses salesmen, (who were surprisingly respectful today), we had a pretty chilled few hours.

Day 678 – AGM tonight

I have an AGM to attend tonight, and I’ve had a frustrating day in the weird (but welcome) Cape Town drizzle. The AGM is online, but still requires my time, and dinner isn’t going to cook itself (because we’re ordering burgers).

So… quota photo time.

This one is another from the top of the mountain. I was trying to sleep when some of the others came back from an (alleged) trempette maigre and told me to get out of bed, find my camera (and tripod) and shoot the moon. I clearly wasn’t going to find any peace and quiet until it was done, so I just got it over with, thus:

Go look at it here too.

You have to wonder who designed and built the monstrosity of a second house next to the original Victorian cottage, but in its defence, it’s got amazing views over Cape Town from the deck, and it makes for an OK silhouette on moonrise photos.

Day 660 – Hibiscus

Not much time for anything other than some football and a few jobs around the house today, so here’s a quota photo of a Hibiscus flower, taken while I was loitering waiting for my wife outside the shops in Riebeeck-Kasteel last week.

There’s something almost alien about that style (yes, apparently that’s the technical name).

I wonder if John Wyndham had them in his garden as a child?
