Quota BSE

No. Not the nasty Mad Cow thing. Nor even the Stock Exchanges of Botswana, Barbados or Bombay. And yes, that last one is still a thing.

No. When you’re running out of time between painting the windows of a bar, and playing football in town (traffic? hectic), post a quota Kruger pic:

And make it a Brown Snake Eagle.

This came at us unexpectedly and rather quickly, and I was lucky to get the shot, let alone get any of it in focus. Top marks to the lens for that. But on review, I quite liked the idea of the wingtips being out of focus and out of shot. It does give a nice idea of size and speed.

Both of which were considerable.

Remember back then?

It’s been a whirlwind of school stuff, dodgeball, trips around SA and general life over the last month and a half. But we shouldn’t forget that we were here:

…far from the hustle and bustle of everything just six weeks ago.

This is the Lady Isabella, The Laxey Wheel:

the largest surviving original working waterwheel in the world.

Built in 1854, 22.1m diameter, 3rpm.

You don’t really get much of an idea of scale until you look closely at the man in blue at about 5 o’clock.

I still have to go through a lot of photos from Ireland and the Isle of Man.
And Kruger.
And now Gqeherba.
And I still have to tidy up my Flickr.

But it’s been a whirlwind of school stuff, dodgeball, trips around SA and general life over the last month and a half.

I’ll get there.

One last day

…of this springlike weather before the next cold front comes through and spoils things for the weekend.

This was from this morning, and although it’s yet to make landfall, things are definitely changing already.

Still a chance to head out to horseriding (not me), so we’ll do that before the rain comes in.

Also always a chance of sharing a Kruger pic.

Hard to believe that this was just 10 days ago.

We were reliving some of the (many) great moments last night over a post-match celebratory beer, and there was talk (or at least testing-the-water talk) of another trip.

The water seemed very welcoming.

3. Editing

Today was split three ways.

Gym. Upper body today. And I’m feeling it.

Preparation. For a job on Monday. Formatting SD cards, perfecting shooting modes, checking batteries, cleaning lenses, watching the weather forecast.

And then some editing. Those Kruger photos, whittled down from over 2,000 to just 70. And they might get whittled down a bit more still, but I’m fairly happy with the vast majority of them.

Once I’ve got them uploaded for public viewing, I’ll share the links. For the moment, I’ve shared them with the crew that was there, just so that we can all enjoy reliving some amazing memories.

Back from the Bush

What an experience. From start to finish. New friends, much laughter, a little too much alcohol (perhaps), literally thousands of kilometres, heat, dust, a gazillion elephants, that leopard, some incredible sightings*, some amazing memories. It was very special.

I’ve got about 2,500 images to sift through. Many won’t make the cut, but that’s just fine. Some will be good. Hopefully, one or two will even be proper keepers.

But they will have to wait. Today has been a real snap back to reality: a cold, wet Cape winter’s day, and flooring work in the bar meaning that we have furniture everywhere and we have to run the gauntlet of across the patio in the filthy weather in order to get between the kitchen and the rest of the house.

Catching up with everything else has been a priority ahead of a job next week, so the photos – desperate as I am to see what’s there – are taking a back seat for the moment.

But don’t worry, you won’t have to wait too long.

Soon.
