Going elsewhere – come follow

Once Space Karen got hold of the Twitter reins, things were never going to be great. It’s not like we didn’t see it coming. But now he’s hammering nails into nails that were already in the coffin.

Some of them are very clearly penetrating the corpse. It’s leaking. Eww.

Shutting down Tweetdeck is a big loss for me, and the requirement to pay for so many features just isn’t happening. I have no issue paying for a good quality service – I pay for plenty of them on the internet – but that’s not what Twitter is anymore.

And yet, I don’t really want to leave: it feels like deserting an old friend (it’s been over 14 years!). But that old friend has become unruly, unpleasant and abusive, and isn’t nice to be around. And so you’ll definitely see (even) less of me on there from now on.

So, where are we going to go and play instead? Well, there are few issues with that. Firstly, that there aren’t many good choices: although there are plenty of mediocre ones. And you need one to stand out from the crowd because you need a critical mass of users to make it function and be useful – for it to work well – in the way that Twitter did all those years ago.
Nothing has stuck its head above that parapet… yet.

And so I have profiles at a couple of places – you can see all my socials at the top of the sidebar up there [indicates upwards and right]. But right now, I’m throwing my weight behind Spoutible.

Find my profile there… er… here.

It seems the best option with lots of the good twitter features, and fewer of the bad ones. And it also seems to take a lot of user feedback and suggestions into account when adding stuff. It also has some pretty strict rules about abuse, harassment etc. So if you think that’s likely to infringe on your right to “free speech”, then maybe it isn’t for you.

Shame.

It looks promising. But it needs to be bigger before it will work properly, and so if it doesn’t make that critical mass I mentioned above, then it won’t fly. If that’s the case, it will hopefully be because something equally good (or better) has made it.

Anyway, I’m lucky enough to have this place [indicates general blog space] so that I can at least tell people where I’m going to be if Spoutible doesn’t work out. So please keep coming back here even when we’ve all left the hellsite that twitter has become. After all, everyone needs to regularly visit at least one hellsite, just so you can be reminded of how good the rest of the internet is.
And if it’s not the Loud Mouth Space Wanker’s place, then it might as well be here.

So. This isn’t a complete farewell, but it is a definite move to set up home elsewhere.

I look forward to you popping in for coffee soon.

All over for the bluebird?

It’s the beginning of the end
The car went up the hill and disappeared around the bend
Ask anyone, they’ll tell you that
It’s these times that it tends
To start to break in half, to start to fall apart
Hold on to your heart

It seems that being a bit of an arse to your staff isn’t the best way to be a boss. I think that this is fairly well understood, but sometimes, people get too detached from reality to remember these sorts of things, and so they persist in their being a bit of an arse to their staff, and things break.

It’s been a hilarious rollercoaster ride of fanciful allegations (most of which then turned out to be true), and subsequent backtrackery since the Loud Mouth Space Wanker bought Twitter, and immediately tried to change things that didn’t need changing, just to show what power he could wield.

That’s not to say that some things didn’t need changing. Twitter used to be great, but had more recently become a cesspool of misinformation, insults, hatred and division. Pretty much a metaphor for the rest of the world, but concentrated into one small app, so that the nastiness could really be amplified.

When Musk took it over, the only people smiling about it were the right-wing, anti-vax Trump fans. And that was a pretty good indication of where it was heading. But that was just on the surface. Beneath the crusty exterior, Elon was… well… being an arse to his staff. But apparently, there’s only so much boss arsery that staff are willing to take:

Who knew? Well, even I did: just check out the first sentence of this post.

So, is this the end for Twitter? To be honest, I’d been using it less and less over the past few years. But I’ll still miss it.
Maybe it’s for the best, given the direction it was clearly about to take. Of course, Musk doesn’t think so, but the replies to his tweet are exactly the reason that I’ll miss Twitter so much when it chooses (or I choose) to give up completely.

There are still many, many interesting, erudite, important, humorous and entertaining people on the app, and still plenty of useful information, from valid local and international sources, and it’s sad that those informal bonds and communities seem likely to die the death now.

Everyone is bailing (see Titanic and Old Testament references above) for other places, and yes, I am there (see the link at the top of the sidebar), but I’m really not sure I’m ready to start over with the 13+ years of building things up again. Maybe.

Still, if all else fails, this place will always* be here.

The outside world

I have noticed (and I’m sure that you have too, looking at reader figures, lol), that a disproportionate number of recent posts have been all about me (me, me). I don’t really have any problem with this, because my most important reader is me (me, me), but this isn’t a decision that I have made: it’s just something that has happened.

Why? Well, two reasons mainly. Firstly, I have been so busy lately that I haven’t really noticed anything else that’s been going on in the outside world. But I’ve told you all about that ad nauseum. And then, when there is time to look at what’s been going on in the outside world, well, why would you want to?

There’s very little encouraging news out there at the moment.

If it’s not war in Ukraine, famine in Eritrea, potential terrorist attacks in [checks notes] Johannesburg(!?!), global fiscal meltdown or the Loud Mouth Space Wanker taking over Twitter, it’s probably something equally depressing like wild conspiracy theories about Covid vaccine side-effects. (Always remember.)

Brushing this stuff under the carpet by simply ignoring it doesn’t solve any of those problems, but then neither does having them thrust in your face by news sites, and being reminded that everything is going to hell in a handbag and all the gory details therein does nothing (or everything, depending on how you want to look at it) for your existential dread.

And so sometimes it’s better to bury one’s head in the sand of lists of jobs, taxiing kids around, and the daily mundanities of one’s own life, rather than having to endure constant reminders of all the crap going on out there.

Thus, I shall probably continue doing just that. Sorry, not sorry.

UPDATE: It’s October 31st, and apparently someone agrees with my sentiments…

Exactly.
