Back home

Mmm? Great time away, yes, thanks.

Yeah. Bit tired, but worth the effort to get out for a walk on the beach this morning.

Not much traffic, actually, no. Found ourselves just behind a rooikrans truck near Caledon: was a bit like a mini version of Final Destination. Yeah, the tree trunk one, but with the logs chopped to a handy braai size.

Anyway, we survived.

Well, the weather is looking iffy for the weekend, but there’s football on, so I’m sure I’ll manage.

Thanks for asking.

You too.

Lots and lots of cool photos today from a trip to the Black Oystercatcher for lunch.

Herewith just a taster, because I’m not sitting here all evening editing when there’s beer to be drunk.

We watched this guy enjoying a mid-morning snack, but more of that later (or just check my Instagram). Then he posed for us on a handy fence post. Thanks.

More photos on Flickr “soon”.

There’s a beach out there

The sun is shining, there’s a beach out there, and even though it’s blowing an absolute gale here, I’m not going to be wasting time being indoors and sitting in front of a laptop today.

So please enjoy a shongololo – the Giant African Millipede – Archispirostreptus gigas – in defensive posture from that very beach yesterday. This one wasn’t so giant: maybe only 12cm tip to tail, but it did have a million legs.

Approximately.

Later, we will be trying to find more interesting things outside in the rapidly moving fresh air, so please watch my Instagram to join in with the fun.

But right now, I am going to remain indoors cooking up some bacon and eggs.

Split

The family has gone its separate ways across the country this week.

One to Johannesburg – his first proper trip away “by himself”. He’ll be fine. We’ll (probably) be fine.
One to Cape Town – not really very difficult, since that was where she started as well. Some would call it lazy, but I wouldn’t dare.
Two to Cape Agulhas – I am happy to report that it seems likely that I will be one of these.

The beagle has contented itself with remaining in Cape Town, where the smells are familiar and the kibble is plentiful. It’s always unwise to take any sort of risk where food is involved, if you are a beagle.
