Dafternoon

Dafternoon (noun): The period immediately before an early evening braai during which you engage in foolish behaviour, play football in ridiculous heat, come home and drink far too much Black Label and chat with friends under the trees.

It was a great day. The football was fun, the beer was cold and the company was, as ever, entertaining.

Given the physical demands of today, tomorrow morning will almost certainly bring a world of pain. But it was worth it.

“BraaiDay” song set to take SA by storm

Yeah, yeah – whatever. IMHO, this is amusing and deserves more exposure so I am exposing it.
Not that anyone outside the Republic will understand the nuances of the song, but so what?
Herewith “Derick Watts and the Sunday Blues” [sic] and their rendition of Braaiday:

Of course, “Braai Day” is actually held each year on Heritage Day: “a Public Holiday on which South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their cultural heritage and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people”, but those complaining that the celebration has been hijacked by Jan Scannell and Desmond Tutu should note that their “Braai4Heritage” project does have the backing of the National Heritage Council.

And let’s face it, without their call to braai, we’d all just sit at home and watch the footy on Heritage Day – or er… have a braai.

Try Me I’m New

Because my most important reader is me.
And also because some people aren’t on twitter (my end of which has gone a bit crazy since I posted this earlier today).

Which stomach-churningly combines two of the staples of South African cookery into one handy-to-braai sausage casing.
At what point did someone actually stop whatever they were doing and consider putting pap and wors into a single sausage unit? And then go and do it? And then, having examined the visually-disturbing result, decide that putting it on sale would be a good thing to do?
Have Pick n Pay lost the plot? What are they smoking in that butchery there?

Try me I’m new, it entices.

No thanks. Really. No.

It’s been a taxing day in many ways and so we’re heading quota photoward again. Sorry about that.
This one could have been taken in Cape Town today (although it wasn’t): bright and sunny with stunningly clear blue skies, so we chopped down some trees in the garden and burned the wood under some meat.

It’s nice to be back home. Although the trees aren’t hugely happy about the whole return thing.
