Perfect shot

Spotted earlier on twitter (can’t remember via whom, sorry) – a link to this post, which featured this pic:

Says Bernard de Clerk:

I took this photo a couple of days ago on the beach at a picturesque little spot called Brenton-on-Sea in the Western Cape, South Africa. My friend decided to do a back-flip on the beach and I only had one shot. It came out pretty well!

Yes, it did.

Grow your own

Every muscle, every fibre of my being is screaming out in agony. If you listen carefully, you can probably hear them. It’s not as bad as Sicky Dion, but it’s still definitely not a pleasant sound – especially if it’s coming from within you.

The reason for that screaming is the new vegetable patch that I installed chez 6000 this morning. As you can see from the photos below, before work began, the area in question was covered with mutant, cyborg ivy.
Oh yes, it might just look like ordinary ivy to the untrained eye, but having gone in there armed with only a spade and a massive flamethrower, I can assure you there there was something distinctly “otherworldly” about that stuff: for a start, normal earth ivy doesn’t have tungsten roots, does it?

Before, during and after.

And that’s the reason I now sit here with a nice Marlon (for medicinal purposes) and a dread of what fresh pain tomorrow morning will bring. On the up side, we are now growing spinach, beetroot, baby cabbage and… something else which escapes my memory (Eggplant?).

The kids like it, I like it and next door’s cat (a big fan of digging stuff up in our other veggie patch) has already put in an appearance, which I enjoyably curtailed with a handful of gravel.

And then – a little later this evening: this.

NASA Comet Picture Probe Success

Remember when NASA bombed the moon? We all survived and it was a huge anti-climax, but one thing that did come out of it was the infamous high-five fail from LCROSS mission HQ:

Ouch.

Well now their scientists have had more success with the photographing of the Hartley-2 comet after a close encounter… somewhere… out there…

Sadly, it seems that successfully celebrating this amazing achievement is still a little way beyond them:

Shake hands or high-five? Just decide on one and do it.

Come on guys – this isn’t rocket science…

Youth League concerned by creation of fake Twitter accounts in the name of Youth League President Julius Malema

Yes, they are.

And, just in case it disappears like a bloody agent into the night, I have decided to document their concern here:

3 November 2010

The ANC Youth League is concerned by the continuous creation of fake Twitter accounts in the name of ANC Youth League President Julius Malema. There are computer hackers who have created twitter accounts in the name of the President and recurrently posting [sic] misleading messages.

The ANC YL has in [sic] more than one occasion reported these impersonators and hackers, yet no action has been taken against them by the twitter administrators. We will now approach the relevant authorities to report these hackers and call for the closer [sic] of twitter if its administrators are not able to administer reports for violation of basic human rights and integrity.

Those who are hacking systems and impersonating the ANC YL leadership should immediately stop doing so because the laws of this country will come very hard on them [sic].

And no: no computer hackers have created fake ANCYL press releases – this is for real.

Such is the future of politics in South Africa.
