Wow. It seems a while ago now since I heard that Cape Town young-uns nogapsbetween were in the UCT RAG week “Launch your Band” competition. Well, they won that and what they won was an opportunity to head down to Quay 4 for a Bill & Ted style Battle of the Bands (where they found themselves supporting Prime Circle). Well, they did that and they won that as well.
And what they won this time was a slot on the main stage of the 2010 Rocking the Daisies Festival. Epic.
I should maybe tell you that the reason that I am aware of this band is not ever so Rock ‘n’ Roll – actually, I know the drummer’s mum. But hey, if I once met Eminem’s granny, would that make him any less cool? I. Think. Not.
(I haven’t, incidentally.)
nogapsbetween are the first act on the Main Stage on Friday (5pm) – they’ll be warming it up for the likes of (Shame, jy luister na die) Dirty Skirts and 6000 miles... favourites Zebra & Giraffe.
Memories of Glastonbury 2003 come filtering back, where the first act on the main stage on Friday was The Darkness. They headlined Glasto the following year.
From little acorns and all that. It happens.
I’m not going to Rocking the Daisies this year – other commitments and all that – but if you are, please make the effort to go and support nogapsbetween: kick off your weekend in style and get the chance to say you saw them before they hit the big time.
You don’t need me to tell you that that’s hefty musical kudos right there.
More info on nogapsbetween including taster tracks from their forthcoming EP on Facebook.
That was a great night! Where you there?
From when they sent their demo tracks in to us for the preliminary rounds of Launch your Band to hearing them play live for the first time in the tiny Marshall Music studio, I knew that they where going to be something big!
While everyone else may be able to say that they saw them live at RTD before they made it big, I can say that I helped them get to that sport at RTD.
Did you ever think that you would say “I know the drummer’s mum”…. Getting old!!!!
Richard @ UCT > No. Wasn’t in Cape Town, sadly.
Pamela > I know. But on the plus side (desperately clutching at straws) these guys are seriously young – combined age of 64! And there’s 10 of them.
OK, there’s 4 of them. But still.
