6000.co.za is now on Facebook

With Facebook rapidly becoming the all conquering behemoth as far as the internet is concerned, it seemed wise to finally take the plunge and make one of their ridiculously named “fan pages” for the blog. Now it should be noted that for the amateur [waves], Facebook doesn’t make it easy for you to do this – the interface is horrible and not at all intuitive, the language is confusing and everything is that nasty Facebook blue.
It’s probably for those reasons that I haven’t done it before.

But anyway, all in all, it’s been a steep learning curve and I have a horrible feeling that it will continue to be a steep learning curve. But click that LIKE button in the side bar there ~>, (or alternatively, click here) and bear with me and once things are up and running smoothly, I’ll sort out some Facebook-only competitions to make it seem that the 0.5 seconds it took you to click your mouse button was completely worth your while.

Now let’s see if the dlvr.it app does its thing and plonks this post where it needs to go.

11 for 3

No – this isn’t some dodgy cricket score – it’s a reminder that you can get 11 days off for the price of just 3 (if you booked some time ago, this is).
Oi! Don’t look at me like that – I did warn you about this back in January.

Anyway, I’m taking full advantage of this outstanding offer, starting today.

Don’t panic: despite the fact that I will be out of range of any modern communication devices for some time, normal life, such as it is, will continue on the blog with daily posts and fun for all the family (terms and conditions apply). The only difference that you may notice is that comments may take a little longer than usual to clear. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t comment, it just means that when you do, your comment may take a little longer than usual to clear.

If you are travelling during this holiday period, please stay safe: I need as many readers as possible in May. If you plan to drive dangerously or die in any other way, do make sure that you tell your friends and family to visit 6000 miles… regularly to make up for your lost visits.

Too close to home

Several emails and tweets asking why I am not blogging about the Luke Fairweather story.
It’s a reasonable question. Thanks for asking.

Occasionally  – just occasionally – there are topics which I would LOVE to blog about, but am unable to. These are generally specific and local issues which are linked somehow to what we in the blogging sector call “Real Life”.
One of the rules that I have laid down for myself and to which I still rigidly adhere is that my blogging must not negatively impinge on my “Real Life” or that of my family or friends (and relationships with those individuals).

The Luke Fairweather case is one of those times. Despite me having strong feelings on this story, Mr Fairweather and I shared a mutual friend (a regular reader, he claims) (and I have no reason to doubt him) and thus this one falls neatly into that “too close to home” category because my respect for my “Real Life” friends and their thoughts come ahead of airing my views on here.

Next year

I think we’ll go for the post a day thing again in 2011. It went well last time I did it, although it was sometimes a little tough to get something down every day. My home life suffered a little.
On that note,  I haven’t told my wife yet, but maybe she’ll read this and then she’ll know.

I think I’ll know when she’s found out, anyway.

We’ll start bright and early (well, bright anyway) (possibly) tomorrow with a review of some of the Cape Town tourist attractions on offer for the remainder of this summer holiday.

Until then – Happy New Year to you all from Chez 6000. We look forward to having you on-board for another roller coaster year of ups, downs, regular screaming and concerns over potential metal fatigue and insufficient maintenance.

Except, apparently The Guru can’t read all that good – it actually starts at 2AM CAT on the 28th.

Which now means that I’m not allowed to post tomorrow (this currently being today, the day before tomorrow), but I can now post today and schedule it for 1am CAT tomorrow (tomorrow (the day when the servers are migrating) being the day after today, (when the servers aren’t migrating anymore)).

Got that?

With another couple of weeks of staggered leave for myself and Mrs 6000 (read: lack of childcare), there’s sure to be more, so do pop back soon.
